In short
Chalk & Cistern asks you for nothing: there are no accounts, no forms and no advertising or analytics trackers, and the only outside requests are for fonts and, if you choose, videos.

What is collected
Nothing that you type, because there is nowhere to type it. The site has no sign-up, no login, no comment box, no newsletter and no enquiry form. It runs no advertising code and no analytics service, and it sets no cookies to follow you between pages or across other websites.
That means there is no profile of you to keep, sell or delete. Reading a page here leaves the same trace as fetching any page on the web, described under server logs below.
Fonts and videos
Two kinds of content come from Google rather than from this site.
The typefaces are served by Google Fonts. When a page loads, your browser asks Google's font servers for the font files, and in doing so passes on the details any web request carries, such as your IP address and browser type. Google's own privacy policy covers what it does with that request.
Some articles include a YouTube video, set up as click-to-play. Until you press play, the only thing fetched from YouTube is the still thumbnail image, which comes from YouTube's image server. The video player itself loads only after you click, and it loads from youtube-nocookie.com, YouTube's privacy-enhanced embedding domain. If you never press play, no player is loaded at all.
Server logs
The company that hosts the site keeps standard server logs. A log line typically records the address that made the request, the page asked for, the time, and the browser's own description of itself. The host keeps them for security and to keep the service running, for example to spot and block abusive traffic. Chalk & Cistern does not use them to profile readers.
Other websites
Pages link to regulations, regulators, utilities, boiler makers and, on some pages, two US water-treatment shops with the same owners as this site. Once you follow a link you are on that site, under its own privacy policy and cookies. Chalk & Cistern has no control over what those sites collect.
Changes
If the way the site loads fonts or videos changes, or a new outside service is added, this page will be updated to describe it.
